A Documentary About Elizabeth Holmes Is Somehow the No. 1 Movie in America
Halloween weekend was a sleepy one at the box office, with the total under $56 million, the second-lowest weekend of the year. And the film that came out on top is a documentary: “You Can See Everything,” about Elizabeth Holmes, from directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.
It took in an estimated $10.6 million in its third weekend and hit No. 1 for the first time. It has now earned about $63.9 million against a reported $7 million budget. For a documentary, that’s a monster return.
It barely edged out DC’s “Clayface,” which pulled in about $10.4 million, only around $200,000 behind. That film fell 57% in its second weekend and sits at $44.1 million, right at its reported $44 million budget. Not great for a superhero movie. Third place went to Laika’s animated “Wildwood” at $7.5 million, followed by “Wicker,” a comedic fantasy with Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, at $4.1 million.
There’s a bigger picture too. Despite the slow weekend, the domestic box office is up more than 17% over last year, at nearly $8.5 billion so far. So Hollywood’s year is fine overall, even if Halloween pulled people out of theaters. Note that these were studio estimates, and final figures were due Monday.
