Instagram has quietly shown up on Apple TV, and it's the company's first official app for Apple's streaming box. For years, people who wanted Instagram on their TV had to rely on third-party apps. Now Meta has made its own, and it's free for anyone running tvOS 26 or later.
The app is built around Reels. Open it, and you'll see a row of Stories across the top, a "For you" grid of short videos underneath, and a menu running down the left side. Pick a reel, and it plays full screen, with likes, comments, reposts, and shares shown next to it. One nice touch is that small profile pictures show which of your friends reacted to a video. According to MacRumors, the app's description also mentions longer videos and live shows, though not every outlet has been able to confirm that part yet.
What's interesting is who Meta is designing this for. It isn't really one person scrolling alone. The whole layout is pitched at a group sitting on the couch watching together, which is basically how families already watch YouTube on the big screen.
Apple TV users are a bit late to this party. Instagram started testing a TV app on Amazon Fire TV in December 2025, moved to Google TV in February and reached Samsung smart TVs in June. The Apple TV version seems to have gone live in the US App Store around October 23, and so far there's no word on other countries.
The bigger picture is pretty clear. Short video is moving off our phones and onto the biggest screen in the house, and Meta wants a seat there alongside YouTube and TikTok. The open question is whether people actually want to watch 30-second clips from across the room.
