We've all stood in front of a full closet thinking we have nothing to wear. Meta thinks AI can fix that. The company has quietly launched a new app called Style Sketch that plans outfits using clothes you already own.
Here's how it works. You connect your Instagram account, and the app builds a virtual wardrobe from the photos you've already posted. You can also add pieces by snapping a photo, recording a short video or pulling images from your camera roll. From there, Style Sketch suggests outfit combos that match your personal style. Pick one item, say a favorite jacket, and it'll build new looks around it. There's also a virtual try-on feature that shows the outfit on a model the app says matches your body shape and skin tone.
The travel feature might be the most useful part. Type in where you're going, how long you'll be there and what you plan to do, and it lays out a day-by-day outfit plan that takes the weather forecast into account. No more packing five sweaters for a beach trip.
There was no big announcement. According to TechCrunch, social media consultant Matt Navarra spotted it first, and Meta didn't respond when TechCrunch asked about it. For now, it's only available on iOS and Android in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, and there's no word on a wider rollout.
Meta isn't the first to try this. Startups like Alta offer AI styling tools, and Google Photos can turn clothing pictures into a digital closet. But Meta's edge is obvious: years of your outfit photos are already sitting on Instagram. The app is part of a bigger push, too. The Wall Street Journal reported that Mark Zuckerberg told staff that Meta plans to release far more apps now that AI makes them faster to build.
