Druski Makes SNL History, With Help From Emma Stone, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle
The internet finally got its own Saturday Night Live host. Druski, the comedian best known for his viral skits and his megachurch preacher character, Pastor Dru, hosted SNL for the first time last night. He's being called the first digital content creator ever to host the show.
He opened his monologue by promising he wouldn't water down his comedy, then admitted his rules included no cursing. He also introduced his family in the audience, and his grandmother used the moment to ask him for money. Then Emma Stone showed up. In a running bit, Druski insisted she plays his love interest in his first movie, which was news to her.
The cold open went straight to last week's election. Sarah Sherman played Chuck Schumer, Kenan Thompson played Hakeem Jeffries, and James Austin Johnson's Trump tried to take credit for the Democrats' wins. The surprise was James Talarico, the real Texas senator-elect, who crashed the sketch. Weekend Update kept the theme going, with Jeremy Culhane playing Elon Musk getting grilled about spending over half a billion dollars on an election only to watch Texas turn blue.
The rest of the night leaned into Druski's character work. The show featured a BET-style panel, a sketch set in a Dominican phone store, and one where his character Daniella melts down over a friend ordering fajitas at a birthday dinner.
The Strokes were the musical guest for the fourth time, playing "Lonely in the Future" and "Going Shopping." Walton Goggins joined them on bongos for the second song, which no one saw coming. And at the goodnights, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle walked out to send Druski off, which says a lot about how the comedy world sees him.
His Netflix series, Collect & Praise, premieres December 1. John Mulaney hosts next week with Phoebe Bridgers.
